Many people compare ordering samples of Venetian plaster, or Microcement to picking up paint swatches. But the reality is very different. Creating an accurate sample for these high-end decorative finishes is a labour-intensive, multi-step process that demands time, precision, and expertise. It’s not something rushed out in minutes, it’s a miniature version of the actual application process, which is why it takes significantly longer and costs more than standard material samples. At Calce Company, we craft every sample by hand in-house to ensure it faithfully represents how the finish will look and perform on your walls, floors, or feature surfaces.

Step 1: Pick the Product and Colour

Here are 3 main considerations when deciding a decorative finish.

1 The location of the product  (where you're applying it)

2

Texture vs. Movement

(how the surface feels and looks under light)

3 Colour

(how shades impacts texture visibility)

Colour selection is one of the most exciting yet critical parts of working with decorative finishes. Unlike flat paint, these materials interact dynamically with light, revealing subtle shifts in tone, depth, and shimmer depending on the angle and time of day.

Step 2: The Preparation Stage: Building a Perfect Foundation

Every great finish starts with an immaculate base. We can’t simply slap product onto raw board and hope for the best. Surface preparation is critical and adds considerable time to the process.

Priming of the samples

Typical steps include:

  • Thorough surface cleaning: Removing all dust, oils, grease, and residues that could interfere with adhesion or the final appearance.

  • Priming: Applying the right primer to promote strong bonding and a smooth, even result.

  • Base coating: Creating a uniform foundation, especially important for translucent or layered finishes like Venetian plaster, where the base colour influences the depth and tone of the final look.

We tailor the preparation to the specific finish and substrate, because what works for a wall-mounted Venetian plaster sample won’t necessarily suit a microcement sample intended for a bathroom or floor. This attention to detail ensures your sample is a true preview, not a rough approximation.

Step 3. Applying the Finish: Skilled Hands and Layered Craftsmanship

Once the surface is ready, the real artistry begins. Every sample is applied by hand using a trowel and other professional techniques and tools, just as it would be on site. Different finishes demand different methods, and each layer must be applied with care.

Applying textured finish with a trowel.

Here’s how we approach some of our most popular finishes:

Venetian Plaster Multiple ultra-thin layers are troweled on, compressed, and burnished by hand. We smooth and polish progressively to achieve that signature deep, reflective marble-like sheen. Rushing any layer ruins the effect.

Microcement This durable, seamless coating involves several coats (often including fibreglass mesh for strength in wet areas), precise troweling, sanding between layers, and sealing. It’s a technical, time-consuming process that creates a modern, waterproof finish suitable for bathrooms, kitchens, and floors.

Metallic Finishes Applied with brushes, sponges, or specialised tools, often in multiple layers to build richness and reflective depth. We blend hues carefully to deliver the exact luminosity and movement you’ll see in the final installation.

The key ingredient? Patience. Each coat must dry fully before the next is applied. There’s no shortcut, rushing leads to cracking, poor adhesion, or an inaccurate colour and texture.

Step 4. Drying and Curing: The Waiting Game

After application, samples don’t just “dry overnight” like ordinary paint. Many of our lime-based plasters and microcements require proper curing, a chemical hardening process that can take days, depending on the product, thickness, and environmental conditions.

Proper curing is essential for long-term durability, especially with breathable lime products or waterproof microcement systems. All of this — preparation, skilled multi-layer application, drying between coats, and curing — makes sample production far more involved and expensive than mass-produced paint chips. But it’s the only way to give you confidence that the finish you choose will look and perform exactly as expected.
